6G4Society
OUR PROJECTS
6G4Society focuses on the evolution of mobile communication technologies toward the Sixth Generation (6G). Its goal is to support the EU in “regaining global technological leadership by seizing the opportunities offered by 5G” and to shape future technological progress so that it is useful and beneficial to society as a whole, with a core emphasis on social values and sustainability.
The primary objective is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to test and make operational the innovations promised by 6G technology, such as exponential performance improvements and the management of an unprecedented volume of data. On the other hand, it seeks to ensure that these innovations concretely meet the needs of citizens and the socio-economic fabric. Within 6G4Society, CyberEthics Lab. studies the possible social impacts, considering the factors and processes that influence the social acceptance of 6G: the goal is to promote responsible innovation and foster active citizen engagement.
To achieve its aims, 6G4Society employs a set of cutting-edge resources and strategies. The project adopts a co-creation approach, involving active participation from academics, private companies, and end-users. Special attention is also given to energy sustainability and cybersecurity in future network architectures. Issues and controversies related to privacy, environmental impact, and energy efficiency are taken into account through the analysis of “trade-offs”: the aim is to understand possible objections, ensuring that the perspectives of all stakeholders are considered and valued, in order to find effective solutions that do not overlook any factor within the complex network formed by environments, societies, and individuals.
6G4Society is not just a technological innovation project, but a coordinated effort to guide this evolution in an ethical, inclusive direction, oriented toward improving both public and private services. The initiative seeks to lay the foundations for a digitally empowered society, where technology acts as a catalyst for collective well-being and fosters a conscious, participatory digital transformation.
Innovation has never come through bureaucracy and hierarchy. It has always come through individuals.”
